The Knitting Basket’s New Owners Expand Hours and Class Offerings at Richmond’s Popular Shop
Richmond, VA, February 1, 2006 — The Knitting Basket, a beloved West End fixture on Grove Avenue
near Libbie, is under new ownership, and is developing an expanded schedule of classes and
workshops for knitters at all levels of interest and expertise. New partners Ute Grzanna and Kristin Bright,
both long-time knitters and knitting teachers, intend to stay with the shop’s successful formula of
interesting, high quality materials, a knowledgeable sales and teaching staff, and commitment to the
warm personal atmosphere that inspires the loyalty of its many customers.
The popularity of knitting has exploded in recent years, and that popularity has fueled the development of
a dizzying array of imaginative new patterns and yarns. Beautiful traditional materials, both natural and
synthetic, are still much in demand. The age-old skill is easy to learn - a new knitter can begin turning out
satisfying projects very quickly, and then can go on mastering more complex techniques as far as time
and imagination allow.
In March, the Knitting Basket will be expanding its weekday closing time until 6:00 p.m. Between 16 and
20 classes, some teaching basic or advanced skills and some based on specific projects chosen by
each participant, are offered in morning, afternoon, or evening time slots throughout the week, at a cost
of $70, plus materials, for each six-week session. For those with more interest than time, two-hour
Sunday afternoon workshops dedicated to quick, manageable projects (felted baby booties in February,
a beaded scarf in March) will be offered for $25 each, plus materials.
These two passionate knitters are thrilled to have stewardship of this Richmond institution and its
relationships with its neighbors, customers, and friends, as they pass their knowledge of the art of
knitting on to more people.
